About Dan

Photo of Dan Marshall

Dan Marshall explores and photographs abandoned buildings. It all started when a friend said over 20 years ago that it would be fun to go to an old asylum in Waltham Massachusetts. It took some convincing but it turned out his friend was right. They hopped in his mom’s minivan and drove to the abandoned Metropolitan State Hospital. Dan was amazed by the combination of the architecture and decay, the sense of history, and was excited by exploring the abandoned building. Dan found a new life-long hobby. Weekends turned into road trips with friends, visiting incredible sites all over New England and eventually all over the country. He has explored hundreds of places, from asylums to theaters and everything in between, and has taken thousands of photos along the way.

As Dan grew older and became a dad, his excursions aren’t as often since exploring abandoned buildings can be a bit dangerous. He did go to a big urban exploring meet-up in New York just this summer.

On display today is a collection of my photographs taken over 20 years in more than twenty states. All of them at places most people would never step foot in. I have avoided security, climbed the side of buildings, tiptoed across floors (that I am very thankful didn’t collapse), and all other kinds of nonsense just to get a chance to explore these amazing buildings from our past. I still enjoy looking through all my photos often – it has been a terrific way to document my crazy adventures. I hope you enjoy a glimpse into these forgotten worlds.
